A Jinx review …

jinx.jpgSo it’s time for the Jinx reviews to start trickling in. Here’s what Romantic Times magazine had to say about the book in the September issue, courtesy reviewer Susan Mobley:

This addition to Estep’s superhero series is packed with action, humor, romance, a touch of sorrow and just plain fun. The main characters are a delight, especially the hero, and the familiar faces from previous stories will have those who haven’t read them wanting to dig them up.

Summary: Life with superheroes is not all it’s made out to be, especially if your superpower is luck, and not always the good kind. Bella Bulluci is worried that her luck will jinx the opening of a museum exhibit, Whimsical Wonders, that she is in charge of.

And, of course, something goes wrong. Someone attempts to steal the star sapphire that’s the centerpiece of the exhibit, and Bella is kidnapped — or perhaps rescued — by the mysterious Debonair, a teleporting art thief. As Bella gets to know him, she discovers his true identity and enlists his aid in trapping the thieves who, being ubervillains, will once again attempt to steal the sapphire. (Berkley SENSATION, Sep., 320 pp., $7.99) HOT. 4 stars.

Thanks for the great review, Susan! I’ve also gotten links to some other reviews, which I need to post here on the blog. I’ll try to get to it soon. In the meantime, I’m doing the happy dance over this one.

I hope that you will be doing a local television interview to promote Jinx — I don’t remember you doing one when your other books came out. Tarah Taylor seems really nice on Channel 5, and she does lots of interviews with authors. Also Channel 11 has the new daytime show with Amy Lynn. I’m sure you would make a great guest – And I would love to read a post about the experience.

I actually did the noon news show on WJHL with Karma Girl last year in May. Which was memorably because the anchor kept saying “Hot Mama” over and over again. I got a lot of kidding in the BHC newsroom over that.

I don’t think I’ll be doing any of the local TV shows with Jinx. I don’t know that it’s a good use of my time, especially since I’m only going to be doing a couple of local signings this time around. I just don’t know how many people would watch and then come out to a book signing later.

As for WCYB, I tried to get on their noon news show last year, but they never responded to me (although I do think they listed my book signings in their calendar of events). Same thing goes for the Johnson City Press. I sent my info to them, and they never responded or ran anything.

The Kingsport Times-News did two lovely stories on me, though. So did the BHC. So we’ll see how things shake out this time around.

But I am cutting back on my local promo stuff. At this point, I think writing is a better use of my time. And sending out promo stuff is a big time suck — not to mention the postage. 😮

I’m also cutting back on my local signings mainly because it’s so complicated to set something up at a B&N or BAM chain that it’s just not worth the trouble. Plus, I was told I had to guarantee a significant crowd if I wanted to sign at a B&N, and well, I just can’t promise that.

Interesting that you’re cutting back on the promo. I’m glad you’re still doing internet and coming to Magical.

Edie — I’m cutting back on my local promo, but I’m doing more Internet blogs this time. I think blogging on romance-centric Web sites like Magical is a better use of my time and will help me reach more of that core romance audience.

Besides, I really do love guest blogging. It doesn’t even feel like work it’s so much fun! 😎

I would have loved to have seen you interview last year. If you ever do another please post the time and channel in advance so I can tune in.

I’m not sure an appearance on WCYB would sale any books, but it is the most watched station in our area. And with the BHC cutting back on the area it serves — I’m one of the people that no longer gets the newspaper — I don’t think TV would be a waste of time. So I would hope that you would try again to get booked on WCYB.

Okay, I’ll post the next time I’m on TV. Although I have no idea when that will be …

I’m not sure why I haven’t been able to get on WCYB. Getting on WJHL was easy since we’re owned by the same company, and they’ve had all the other BHC folks who write books on. I don’t know if WCYB just isn’t interested (and many people aren’t) or if maybe they have some policy in place against promo-ing other journalists (sometimes that happens).

I’ve tried other local media with varying degrees of success. A! Magazine ran a little something, but I’ve emailed Marquee several times and haven’t gotten much interest. It’s a crapshoot like everything else …
