It just depends on whose definition you use. It seems like everyone has different definitions for the terms.

I just tend to think that if it’s less than 10,000 words, then it is a short story. If it’s more, then it’s a novella.

The word length for a novella is between 17,500 and 40,000 words; novelette is between 7,500 and 17,500 words.
