Venom in the Veins, Elemental Assassin #17, coming on June 12 …

I will be self-publishing Venom in the Veins, Elemental Assassin #17, on June 12. Woot! I know you guys have been waiting for Gin’s next adventure, and I’m so happy that the release date is almost here. Note that I have updated some of the information below.

VENOM IN THE VEINS BOOK DETAILS

Ebook: $5.99 and available for pre-order at the following sites:

    Amazon Kindle / Barnes & Noble e-book / Google Play / iBooks / Kobo / Smashwords

Print: The print book won’t be available to order until release day, June 12. The print book will be available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I’ll share those links as soon as they are online. The price will be $14.99.

Also, the print book will be trade paperback size—not the smaller mass market size as the previous books in the series. The trade paperback size is all that is available to self-published authors, so there is nothing that I can do to change the book size.

Audiobook: There will be an audiobook, and the awesome Lauren Fortgang will once again be the narrator. I’ll share more info about the audiobook as it becomes available.

Booksellers: Booksellers at indie and other bookstores will be able to order print copies of Venom in the Veins through IngramSpark to sell in their stores. Booksellers at Barnes & Noble stores can order the book through the B&N Press system.

Cover art: The cover art was once again done by the awesome Tony Mauro, and the cover model is Alexa Martino.

Description: Here is the book description:

Blood might be thicker than water, but venom is stronger than just about anything …

It was supposed to be a nice, quiet, simple dinner with friends—but nothing is ever nice, quiet, or simple when you’re Gin Blanco, the Spider, notorious assassin and current queen of the Ashland underworld.

This time around, someone seems to be targeting Stuart Mosley, the president of First Trust bank. Lots of people have grudges against Mosley, but the more I investigate, the more Mosley’s problems seem to be connected to some of my own, especially when it comes to the Circle, the evil, shadowy group that is secretly responsible for much of the crime and corruption in Ashland.

But when another blast from my dark and deadly past as the Spider comes to light, I wonder if I’ll be able to survive this dangerous new enemy, who has a burning thirst for revenge that will only be satisfied with one thing: my death.

I hope that everyone enjoys the book when it is released. Thanks!

Snared, Elemental Assassin #16, to be released on April 25 …

Book #16 Snared, book #16 in my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series, will be released on April 25, 2017. Woot!

As always, the cover was created by Tony Mauro, and the cover model is Alexa Martino. I love all the little details on this one, like the bloody spider runes on Gin’s hands and the spider rune in the title.

You can pre-order Snared at all the usual book retailers:

    Amazon Kindle / Amazon paperback / Barnes & Noble e-book / Barnes & Noble print book / Books-A-Million / Google Play / iBooks / IndieBound / Kobo

The audiobook will be available through Audible and Amazon, and the awesome Lauren Fortgang will once again be the narrator. The pre-order links for the audiobooks should be online sometime in March. I’ll share those links here on my blog and on my social media sites when they go online.

Here is the description for Snared. Note: This contains some spoilers from previous books in the series, starting with Bitter Bite, book #14. So if you haven’t read that far in the series yet, you may want to avoid reading the description below:

The sixteenth book in the New York Times bestselling Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series that RT Book Reviews calls, “An extraordinary series…[containing] one of the most intriguing heroines in the genre.”

If you don’t know Gin “the Spider” Blanco, you don’t know dangerous female heroines.

Irony 101—The Spider herself snared in someone else’s web …

Another week, another few clues trickling in about the Circle, the mysterious group that supposedly runs the city’s underworld. Gathering intel on my hidden enemies is a painstaking process, but a more immediate mystery has popped up on my radar: a missing girl.

My search for the girl begins on the mean streets of Ashland, but with all the killers and crooks in this city, I’m not holding out much hope that she’s still alive.

A series of clues leads me down an increasingly dark, dangerous path, and I realize that the missing girl is really just the first thread in this web of evil. As an assassin, I’m used to facing down the worst of the worst, but nothing prepares me for this new, terrifying enemy—one who strikes from the shadows and is determined to make me the next victim.

You can read the first chapter of Snared by going here. Scroll down, and click on the Read Excerpt tab.

I hope that everyone enjoys Snared when it is released.

Guest post: Lisa Shearin on urban fantasy …

Lisa ShearinToday, I’m pleased to welcome fantasy author Lisa Shearin to my blog. Lisa is the author of the Raine Benares fantasy adventure series and The Grendel Affair, which will be released on Dec. 31.

    LISA SHEARIN ON URBAN FANTASY

Jennifer: Welcome, Lisa! Please tell readers about your SPI Files series.

Lisa: Thank you so much for inviting me, Jennifer!

The SPI Files books center around the knowledge that creatures from myth and legend are real. They’ve always lived among us, but only in the last few decades have humans become irresistibly interesting to them — and beings previously known only in the fantasy section of a bookstore have become a very real problem for us.

Most of them come here wanting the same things as the rest of us: a good job, nice house, 2.5 kids, and a dog. But what happens when there are others who want more? Combine that with magical powers that humans have never had to deal with, along with supersized supernatural greed. These beings don’t just want their slice of the American Dream; they want the whole pie, and they don’t care what they have to do, who they have to kill, or how many city blocks they have to level to get what they want.

That’s why SPI (Supernatural Protection & Investigations) was founded. To even the odds. SPI’s mission is twofold: keep the world safe for supernaturals and humans alike, and cover up the truth. Because when it comes to supernaturals, to paraphrase Jack Nicholson: people can’t handle the truth. SPI has offices worldwide, and their agents are recruited from various alphabet agencies, top police forces, and military special ops, and are supported by the sharpest scientific and academic minds.

At least most of them are. Then there’s Makenna Fraser. A small-town Southern girl who is recruited by the director of SPI as a seer. “Mac” comes from a long line of seers, people who can see through any veil, ward, shield, or spell any supernatural can come up with as a disguise.

Her job as the seer for the New York office is to point out the supernatural bad guys, then step aside so SPI’s commando-ninja-badass monster fighters can take them into custody — or if necessary, take them out. Doing her part to help keep the world safe is gratifying work, with regular pay, and her job description includes three of the most beautiful words in the English language: full medical coverage. If Bigfoot was on the rampage hurting innocent campers, Mac would hunt him with a butterfly net if it meant having a decent dental plan.

Her partner is Ian Byrne, who came to the SPI by way of the NYPD. His partner was gutted by a ghoul during a robbery gone wrong. Ian wanted to get the thing that killed his partner. That’s next to impossible to do if the people you work for don’t officially acknowledge that said perp even exists.

In The City That Never Sleeps, there’s plenty of weirdness for everyone.

For SPI, business has never been better.

grendel affair_front mech.inddJennifer: The first book in the series, The Grendel Affair, releases on Dec. 31. Can you tell us a little about it?

Lisa: A killer is loose in New York. The police think it’s a sickle-wielding serial killer. We know that it’s something far worse.

Prowling beneath the city’s subway tunnels is a descendant of Grendel. Yeah, that Grendel. We don’t know who smuggled the thing into the country or why, but it’s a short list of supernatural sickos.

We’re Supernatural Protection & Investigations (SPI). We battle the very real monsters of myth and legend—and those who would unleash them. We take down the monsters and we cover up the truth. Because when it comes to monsters, the truth won’t set anyone free—it’ll incite a global panic attack.

This thing’s ancestor was, shall we say, notorious for its intolerance of drunken revelry in King Hrothgar’s mead hall. Carnage is the nicest way to describe how it would stop loud parties. Unfortunately, its descendant is a chip off the old claw.

The timing of the modern Grendel’s release is no accident. In less than 48 hours, New York plays host to the world’s largest party—New Year’s Eve in Times Square. A million people there, and billions more watching. Unless we find Grendel before midnight, when the ball drops, the secret’s out and time’s up.

Jennifer: What appeals to you about urban fantasy?

Lisa: What happens and how we humans react when paranormal creatures or supernatural events come charging into and disrupt our ordered little lives.

Jennifer: What inspired you to write the SPI Files series?

Lisa: I’ve always loved movies like Ghostbusters, Men in Black, Big Trouble in Little China, and Galaxy Quest.  It’s so much fun to watch (and read) what happens when creatures that we humans think don’t exist punch a hole into our world and show us how very wrong we are.

Jennifer: What are some of your favorite fantasy books/authors and why?

Lisa: In the 80s, I devoured anything and everything by David Eddings, Raymond Feist, and Terry Brooks. Now, my favorite fantasy reads are the Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher, everything by Rob Thurman and Ilona Andrews, and the Monster Hunter International books by Larry Correia. I also love reading thrillers with a paranormal twist — in particular James Rollins’ Sigma Force books, the Agent Pendergast novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, and the Event Group books by David Golemon.

Jennifer: Have you always wanted to be a writer? What got you started on your writing journey?

Magic Lost, Trouble FoundLisa: I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. As soon as I learned to read and write, I’ve been making up stories and writing them down. But it wasn’t until college that I decided I wanted to be an author. I remember that I’d just come back from a trip to the local Waldenbooks and was bummed that I couldn’t find anything I wanted to read. Apparently it was a complaint I’d made often enough to annoy my roommate. She said that if I couldn’t find any books I wanted to read, why didn’t I just write my own? Ever since then I’ve been writing the books I want to read but can’t find in a bookstore.

Jennifer: What’s next for you? Will there be more books in the SPI Files series?

Lisa: I’m contracted for three books, but hope that they’ll sell well and my publisher will want to buy more. These stories are so much fun; I want to keep writing them. At the same time, I’d like to get back to my characters from the Raine Benares novels, either with more books, novellas, or short stories. I miss Tam, in particular.

     MORE ABOUT LISA

Contrary to popular belief, most authors do have day jobs just like everyone else. Lisa’s happily freelancing for an advertising agency as an editor and proofreader. In her previous corporate life, she’s been a magazine editor, advertising copywriter, and writer of corporate marketing materials of every description.

Lisa is the national bestselling author of the Raine Benares novels, a series of six comedic fantasy adventures. Her next series — the SPI Files — is an urban fantasy that’s been described as Stephanie Plum meets Men in Black. It will debut on Dec. 31, 2013.

Lisa is a voracious collector of fountain pens both vintage and modern. She lives in North Carolina with her husband, two spoiled-rotten retired racing greyhounds, and a Jack Russell Terrier who rules them all.

You can find out more about Lisa on her website, Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads.

    Holiday gift guide — Books

Today, I thought I would finish up my holiday gift guide by talking about books. For more holiday ideas, check out my previous posts about music and TV shows.

    HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE — BOOKS

    ACTION-ADVENTURE AND SPY THRILLERS

SoloSolo by William Boyd: James Bond is back in this new book, which takes him on an adventure to Africa in 1969. This might be good for the spy thriller fan on your holiday shopping list.

Carte Blanche by Jeffrey Deaver: This is another James Bond book, although this one features Bond in today’s world.

Spirit of Steamboat by Craig Johnson: This is the latest book in Johnson’s Walt Longmire mystery series, which some of you may know from the Longmire TV show. My dad enjoys these, and they might be a good fit for the western or mystery lover on your list.

Richard Stark’s Parker, Vol. 1: The Hunter by Richard Stark and Darwyn Cooke: This is a graphic novel of The Hunter, the first book in Stark’s series about Parker, a thief who will do whatever it takes to get the job done.

    FANTASY

He Drank, and Saw the Spider by Alex Bledsoe: Okay, okay, this book isn’t actually coming out until Jan. 14, but Bledsoe’s Eddie LaCrosse series is a cool mix of fantasy and detective noir fiction. Wheezley and I have both enjoyed the books in this series.

And hey, Valentine’s Day is coming up soon, right?

In the meantime, get caught up on the other books in the series, which include The Sword-Edged Blonde, Burn Me Deadly, Dark Jenny, and Wake of the Bloody Angel.

Kicking ItKicking It anthology: This urban fantasy anthology, edited by Faith Hunter and Kalayna Price, features stories from Chloe Neill, Rachel Caine, and other authors.

I really like anthologies because they let me check out a variety of authors. Plus, they’re perfect for when you only have a short time to read. You can finish a story, put the book down, and then go on to the next story when you have a chance.

The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch: I actually bought this one for Wheezley when it came out in October, but if you’re looking for a new epic fantasy series for yourself or someone on your list, check out Lynch’s books, which follow two thieves as they have a series of adventures. The first book is The Lies of Locke Lamora, while the second book is Red Seas Under Red Skies.

    ROMANCE

Dangerous Seduction by Zoe Archer: This is the second book in Archer’s Nemesis Unlimited historical romance series, after Sweet Revenge. The holiday e-novella Winter’s Heat is also available.

I’ve seen the series described as a historical version of the TV show Leverage. Basically, a group of folks help the helpless against the rich and powerful, and romance blossoms for some of them along the way. This might be good for a historical romance lover on your list who’s looking for something a little different in the genre to read.

Love IrresistiblyLove Irresistibly by Julie James: If you’re looking for a contemporary romance read, check out James’s FBI/U.S. Attorney series, which is set in Chicago and features the relationships between, you guessed it, FBI agents and US attorneys.

The books are a lot of fun and full of snappy dialogue. Plus, the couples from previous books make return appearances as the series goes along. As a reader, I always enjoying seeing past characters and catching up with them.

Other books in the series are Something About You, A Lot Like Love, and About That Night. The next book in the series, It Happened One Wedding, is set to be released in May 2014.

    YOUNG ADULT

Princess of the Silver Woods by Jessica Day George: This is the latest book in the Twelve Dancing Princesses series. I love fairy tale books, and I enjoyed the first book in this series, Princess of the Midnight Ball, which features a hero who likes to knit. (I thought that was really cool.) I’ve got the second book, Princess of Glass, in my TBR pile.

Crash Into YouCrash Into You by Katie McGarry: If you’re looking for a contemporary read, check out McGarry’s books, which feature teens struggling with a variety of issues.

Other books in the series include Pushing the Limits and Dare You To. An e-novella, Crossing the Line, is also available. Warning: These books will make you root for and cry with the characters at the same time.

Poison by Bridget Zinn: This is a really charming, young adult epic fantasy book about Kyra, a potions maker who saves her kingdom with the help of a pig. This might be a good choice for the YA reader who enjoys a mix of fantasy, adventure, and friendship in their books.

So those are my book picks. What books are you guys hoping to give or get for Christmas this year?

Carniepunk urban fantasy anthology released …

CarniepunkToday is release day for the Carniepunk urban fantasy anthology that I am participating in along with several other authors. Huzzah!

My story is called Parlor Tricks and is set in my Elemental Assassin world. In Parlor Tricks, Gin and Bria go to a country carnival in search of a missing girl and find some unexpected sights and danger along the way. My story is about 9,000 words long, and you can read an excerpt here.

The book is available in print, e-book, and audio book formats through a variety of online retailers, including the following:

    Amazon

    Barnes & Noble

    Books-A-Million

    iTunes

    Audible (audio books)

    Here is the anthology description:

A star-studded urban fantasy anthology starring bestselling authors Rachel Caine, Jennifer Estep, Kevin Hearne, Seanan McGuire, and Rob Thurman, and including Delilah S. Dawson, Kelly Gay, Mark Henry, Hillary Jacques, Jackie Kessler, Kelly Meding, Allison Pang, Nicole D. Peeler, and Jaye Wells, whose stories explore the creepy, mysterious, and, yes, sometimes magical world of traveling carnivals.

The traveling carnival is a leftover of a bygone era, a curiosity lurking on the outskirts of town. It is a place of contradictions — the bright lights mask the peeling paint; a carnie in greasy overalls slinks away from the direction of the Barker’s seductive call. It is a place of illusion — is that woman’s beard real? How can she live locked in that watery box?

And while many are tricked by sleight of hand, there are hints of something truly magical going on. One must remain alert and learn quickly the unwritten rules of this dark show. To beat the carnival, one had better have either a whole lot of luck or a whole lot of guns — or maybe some magic of one’s own.

Featuring stories grotesque and comical, outrageous and action-packed, Carniepunk is the first anthology to channel the energy and attitude of urban fantasy into the bizarre world of creaking machinery, twisted myths, and vivid new magic.

Pretty cool, huh? This was a fun project to be a part of, and I’m looking forward to reading all of the authors’ stories.

    CARNIEPUNK: PARLOR TRICKS FREE DOWNLOAD

Carniepunk Parlor TricksTo help promote the Carniepunk urban fantasy anthology, Parlor Tricks, my Elemental Assassin short story, is available as a free download. Huzzah!

The cover for the e-download is shown at right, and it is very similar to the Carniepunk anthology cover above.

I think this is a really cool promotional idea, and I’m happy that folks will be able to get a preview of the anthology. The e-download also features some short previews of the other stories in the anthology.

Note that this is available as an e-story only — not in any print or audio versions. Here are some of the sites where you can download the free Carniepunk: Parlor Tricks story:

    Amazon

    Barnes & Noble

    iTunes

     Kobo

Here’s the Carniepunk: Parlor Tricks description from Amazon:

Come to the Carniepunk midway and explore the creepy, mysterious, magical world of traveling carnivals today!

Hope everyone enjoys the latest Gin short story and the entire anthology. Happy reading!
