Monday Morning Mailbag: Is Queen of Foxes a Robin Hood Retelling?

MONDAY MORNING MAILBAG

Question: Is Queen of Foxes a Robin Hood retelling?

Answer: No, Queen of Foxes is NOT a Robin Hood retelling.

What do I mean by that? Usually, a retelling is just what the name implies – someone retelling a familiar, beloved story. Just think of all the various book/movie/TV versions of Snow White. Or Beauty and the Beast. Or pretty much every other fairy tale.

When I started writing Queen of Foxes, I decided not to make it a retelling. Why not? Over the years, I’ve read/watched a lot of retellings, and sometimes, I get a little bored with a story I already know beat for beat. For example, I don’t know that I ever need to see another comic-book origin movie for Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman since there have already been sooo many.

Plus, many Robin Hood stories/legends end with Robin Hood defeating Prince John and/or the Sheriff of Nottingham. But what happens AFTER that?

For Queen of Foxes, I decided to take some of the things I love about Robin Hood lore and put my own twist on them. For example, in chapter one of Queen of Foxes, my heroine Rinley Renard mentions stealing from the rich/giving to the poor. So Queen of Foxes is not a straight-up retelling, but rather inspired by Robin Hood and set in my own unique fantasy world with my own characters.

My editor said that she thinks of the Robin Hood references in Queen of Foxes like Easter eggs. I love that idea! Y’all know how much I enjoy putting Easter eggs in my series. 😉

Queen of Foxes focuses on Rinley Renard, a master thief and dryad who can communicate with sherwood and other trees, plants, and flowers. When her mysterious benefactor tasks Rinley with stealing a priceless relic, she is forced to return to her home kingdom of Feronia, which was conquered by the Caligan Empire thirteen years ago.

Standing in Rinley’s way is Prince Zoren Dreiko, a decima with powerful fire magic. Zoren is also a Dread Knight who has been ordered to hunt down a forest outlaw who is stirring up a rebellion against Prince Jon Dreiko, the Caligan overlord who rules Feronia with an iron fist.

Neither Rinley nor Zoren expects—or wants—the unexpected attraction that flares between them. The dryad and the decima are natural enemies, but their hearts say otherwise . . . 😉
