I recently read His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik - an alternate-reality fantasy that was really fabulous. There were great characters, including talking dragons and wonderful battle scenes. I'm not in the midst of trying to get my hands on the rest of the series so I can find out what happens next to these great characters.
