    Studio 60 and dialogue

Watched the premiere of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip last night. Really enjoyed it. Great cast, great concept, great execution.

    And really great dialogue.

The intelligent, sharp, rat-a-tat exchanges between the characters were one of the best parts of the show. And one of the best parts of TV and movies in general.

The truth is that you just can’t do that kind of rapid-fire dialogue in books. Oh, you can have great dialogue, no question, but you can’t go overboard with it the way you can in other mediums. After a couple of lines in a book or short story, people lose track of who’s talking. Without any visual aids to cue them in … well, it’s just not as thrilling as it is in the movies and on TV.

What about you? Do you love great dialogue? Or does description make your heart sing? Inquiring minds want to know …

  • Project Runway Uh-oh

Nooo!!! They kicked Kayne off Project Runway last night! Sweet, talented funny Kayne is gone. Yet Jeffrey gets to stay on even though he designed something a hooker wouldn’t wear. Not even one stuck in the ’80s.

I’m retiring to my bed now …

  • Breaking out is hard to do …

Watched Prison Break last night. I loved this show last year, but so far, this year’s not gotten off to the best start. Or maybe I’m just not in the mood to watch fall TV just yet.

The first three episodes have been a little over the top. T-Bag being able to move his reattached hand right after surgery. The FBI agent immediately picking up on Michael’s encoded tattoo. And last night, Linc being shot and screaming in agony for the first five minutes of the show … and then being able to climb a small mountain at the end.

The A-Team is one of my favorite shows ever, so I’m willing to suspend my disbelief for a good bit. To the breaking point really. But the Linc thing bothered me last night.

Still, I’m addicted to the show, and I’ll keep watching until the bitter end. And there’s a lot it’s gotten right this year. The desperation of the convicts, the chase scenes, how hard it is to disappear in America, Sara’s conflict, Dominic Purcell and that unbuttoned shirt …

What about you? Are you a Prison Break fan? Who’s your favorite convict? What do you want to happen next? Inquiring minds want to know …

  • Project Runway … off to Paris

Watched Project Runway last night. I don’t understand the judges. Vincent should have gotten the boot for the most boring outfit in the world — black pants and a black shirt. Snooze … Instead, Angela got to fly to Paris … and go right back home.

At least Angela tried to do something with her design … no matter how hideous it turned out. C’mon. Given enough time and fabric to ruin, I could make a pair of black pants and a shirt.

I’m also a huge Kayne fan and can’t believe that the judges almost kicked him off. His shirt was cool, although the “Kayne” belt was a little over the top. But it wasn’t as bad as Jeffrey’s rhinestone crotch jewelry. Ewww!

I hope that Kayne wins, but I have a funny feeling he’s going to get the boot next week. Michael’s my pick to win now. His designs are interesting and different from each other, unlike Laura, who does the same thing every week.

Who do you think will win? Inquiring minds want to know …

  • I love nerds … and Prison Break

Just finished Vicki Lewis Thompson’s “Nerd in Shining Armor.” A cute, fun read. I liked it because the heroine is from the South and is as sassy as the day is long. Sort of like yours truly. Plus, the hero isn’t your usual sultry, broody, alpha male stud muffin. He’s a color blind computer nerd who’s sweet and sensitive. It’s a perfect beach book, especially since most of it is set on a deserted island.

But I like my alpha males too, which is why I’m off to watch Prison Break. What will the boys get into and out of this week? I can’t wait to find out …Â
