My inspiration for A Touch of Treachery …

MONDAY MORNING MAILBAG

Question: What was your inspiration for A Touch of Treachery?

A Sense of Danger red and white cover art with couple, sniper scope, and explosionAnswer: I’ve loved spy stories as long as I can remember. Something about a character going undercover, being surrounded by enemies on all sides, and racing to save the world against all odds just really appeals to me as a reader/viewer and as an author.

The glitzy costumes and glamorous locations in spy stories don’t hurt either, and y’all know how much I love writing action scenes. In many ways, I feel like the spy genre is tailor-made for my writing strengths/interests.

Eventually, I decided that I wanted to write my own spy story and put my own twist on the genre. I love spies and I love magic, so I decided to combine the two in an urban fantasy-type world. That was the start of A Sense of Danger, book #1 in my Section 47 series

Sugar Plum Spies purple cover art with couple, castle, snow, and sparklesFor Sugar Plum Spies, book #2, I wanted to write a holiday story and cram it with as much holiday cheer and decorations as possible. I always love seeing nutcrackers and listening to the music from the ballet during the holiday season, so I thought having Charlotte dress up like a nutcracker and go undercover with Desmond at a Christmas Eve party would be a lot of fun to write.

As far as A Touch of Treachery goes, I wanted to put Charlotte and Desmond in even more danger than ever before, not just from paramortal enemies outside Section 47, but also from some hostile folks inside the spy agency. One of my agents who read an early draft of A Touch of Treachery said it was like a John Wick story set at a ski resort, which I thought was a pretty cool description. 😎

So those were some of my inspirations for my Section 47 books. I hope everyone enjoys reading A Touch of Treachery as much as I did writing it. Thank you for reading!

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS . . .

My name is Charlotte Locke, and I’m on a mission to capture my nemesis. As an analyst for Section 47, a secret spy organization, I use my magical form of synesthesia to track down paramortal criminals, but one villain keeps eluding me—Henrika Hyde.

Henrika claims to have answers about my father’s death on a Section 47 mission years ago, and she has also created a horrific new weapon capable of killing even the strongest paramortals, which makes her my number one target. Helping me is Desmond Percy, a powerful galvanist who is my partner both inside and outside Section 47.

Desmond wants to take Henrika down just as badly as I do, but our mission quickly goes sideways, and soon we’re surrounded by enemies on all sides with no idea whom we can truly trust.

A TROUBLING FUTURE . . .

The  name Desmond Percy is well known inside Section 47, since I’m one of the organization’s top cleaners, aka assassins. Charlotte Locke and I have been tracking Henrika Hyde for months, and when we finally get a lead on her location, we jump at the chance to take down the weapons maker once and for all.

I’m determined to help Charlotte get the answers she is so desperately seeking, as well as taking my revenge on Henrika for killing my best friend.

But the deeper Charlotte and I dig into Henrika and her murky motives, the more dangerous our mission becomes. Henrika is playing her own spy game, and Charlotte and I are just the pawns she is using to achieve her own evil ends—caught up in a deadly legacy of treachery.
