Emma -- That's really cool of you. I'm sure the other authors appreciate that. So far I've always had a few folks stop by my table at Nationals, which is nice. But I remember one year at RT the lady sitting across the aisle from me had maybe one person stop during the whole signing. She looked miserable. I know the feeling -- that's what usually happens whenever I sign at any of my local chain stores. People just walk on by you. Sigh.

I don't mind a bad review if the reviewer is thoughtful and polite about why the book didn't work for her. It's the folks who are mean and nasty about it that really bug me -- especially when they say they only read the first chapter and didn't bother finishing the book.

I'm going to tell you a secret & if you repeat it I will totally deny it. During the signing at Nationals I choose the books I'm going to buy by how empty the author's area is. If she/he is sitting there all by their lonesome looking like they'd like the ground to open up and swallow them I go and buy books from them. It's not that I feel sorry for them or anything, it's just that the shoe could so easily be on the other foot & you can never feed Karma too much. She's a greedy girl that one.

I love your list. Especially number 4, I honestly think people kinda forgot that one.

Thanks, Sandy! I appreciate that. Oh, yeah. I've been that person more times than I can count. Sometimes, I think my theme song for book signings should be Walk On By. LOL.

That's nice of you to go up and talk to them. Two hours can be a looong time to sit there by yourself. Folks buying a book is always nice, but I'm happy just to have someone to talk to for a few minutes.

I did a signing one time at a local chain bookstore and only one person talked to me -- and that was just because she was my Spanish high school teacher!

An excellent list, Jennifer! (I have seen authors sitting at little tables with a stack of books beside them and no one in line more times than I can tell. Sometimes I go up to them and buy a book. Sometimes I don't. But I have always thought that it is an act of courage to put themselves out there like that.)
