Finished Split Image by Robert B. Parker. This is the latest book in Parker’s series about small town police chief Jesse Stone.
In this one, Jesse is called out to investigate the murder of a foot soldier for a local mobster and finds himself dealing with a couple of twin sisters with a dark, twisted secret. Also, private investigator Sunny Randall (the star of another series by Parker) comes to town looking for a girl who’s supposedly been brainwashed by a cult. Jesse and Sunny have a long personal and professional history together, so they team up to get to the bottom of things …
I was very sorry to hear that Parker passed away earlier this year. I’ve read almost all of his books, and his dialogue-heavy style is one that appeals to me as a reader because he makes it look so effortless. He will be greatly missed. Parker, David Eddings, Donald E. Westlake … so many of my favorite authors are no longer with us. It makes me sad.
As for the book itself, I really enjoyed this one because the focus was on Jesse moving on with his life after his disastrous relationship with his cheating ex-wife. Sunny is also moving on from her ex in this book, and it was nice to see her and Jesse work out their problems together. Sure, the mystery was easy to solve, as they usually are in Parker’s books, but getting there is what makes it fun.
If you’re looking for a quick read on a warm afternoon, check out this or any of Parker’s other books. He really was a master writer. Thumbs up.
